SFS Network Mass Balance
Renewable fuel, allocated efficiently and evidenced transparently.
The Sustainable Fuel Scheme enables eligible renewable fuel introduced at one location in an approved corporate network to support an equivalent certified fuel supply from another location in the same country. Every renewable quantity is uniquely allocated, supported by physical fuel movements and stock, and subject to verification.
Certified scopes
- SFS-certified Renewable EN590 DieselNetwork Mass Balance
- SFS-certified Renewable EN228 GasolineNetwork Mass Balance
One-to-one allocation, no negative credential balance, public certificate validation and periodic SFS verification.
How it works
Four controlled steps from renewable input to verified evidence
- Step 1
Renewable fuel enters the network
Eligible renewable fuel and accepted sustainability evidence enter a declared network.
- Step 2
Quantity recorded in the ledger
The sustainability quantity is recorded in the SFS credential ledger.
- Step 3
Uniquely allocated to a supply
An equivalent quantity is uniquely allocated to a physical EN590 or EN228 customer supply within the same country and network.
- Step 4
Evidence issued and verified
SFS issues and verifies an Evidence of Sustainability.
National-grid analogy
Renewable attributes are allocated, not physically traced
A customer on a renewable electricity tariff does not receive electrons traceable to one wind turbine. The renewable generation enters the national grid and an equivalent quantity is allocated to that customer. SFS applies the same principle to fuel: the renewable attributes are allocated within a controlled corporate network, so the same renewable molecules are not necessarily delivered to the customer.
The restrictions that apply
- Same country
- Declared corporate network
- Separate EN590 and EN228 pools
- Physical fuel in and out
- Closing physical-stock support
- No duplicate claims
- Periodic SFS verification
Certified products
Two scopes, two permanently separate balances
Eligible renewable fuel and accepted sustainability evidence are held in separate EN590 and EN228 pools within each declared network. Balances are never merged and characteristics are never averaged.
Fuel quality is outside SFS scope. SFS certifies sustainability chain of custody only.
